Let this moisturizer hydrate, heal and soothe your skin
Are you looking for a superior quality moisturizer? Great! You are in the right place. We’ll make a recommendation below, but first, let’s talk about why you need a moisturizer in the first place.
From another perspective… let’s say that the skin’s surface is like the paint on a car. If the paint is cracked and peeling, then the metal underneath becomes too exposed and unprotected from various elements, which expedite oxidation and make the car rust.
Is this a powerful enough visualization for you?
This same idea applies to your outermost layer of the skin (epidermis). Once it is cracked and dry, you’ve lost your outer shield and the skin is vulnerable to exposure from the outside. On top of it, when your skin’s surface is damaged water evaporates from the dermis (a layer of skin between the epidermis and hypodermis).
Also, when the skin’s shield is weakened you open yourself up to multiple infections, because bacteria can enter through the cracks on the surface.
The outermost layer of epidermis (stratum corneum) contains around 30% water as well as lipids.
Its water content is extremely important! If that essential structure of the skin dries out completely, it can no longer protect the layers of skin underneath.

1. Take a 2-ounce glass bottle and pour in apricot kernel oil.
2. Add the 3 essential oils: lavender, cypress and rosemary. Mix the oils by closing and rolling the bottle between your hands.
3. Now, pour in jojoba oil and mix a second time.
4. Apply a small amount of the cleansing oil blend to a dampened face and neck. You can use your fingertips or a cotton pad.
5. Rinse off with cool water.
a) This cleanser is recommended for all skin types.
b) This blend contains some antiseptic essential oils that will help to eliminate black heads.
c) This blend of oils is, also, great for removing oil-based makeup.
d) You can use this cleanser in the morning and/or in the evening.
2 tablespoons of yogurt
1 tablespoon of applesauce
1 teaspoon of baking soda
1. Mix all ingredients in a blender or by hand.
2. Apply gently a small amount on to your dampened face.
3. Rinse off with warm water
a) This cleanser is recommended for oily skin types.
b) Do not store it. Mix as needed.
1 teaspoon of honey
1 cup of grapes with seeds
1 teaspoon of olive oil
1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
5 tablespoons of whole milk
1. Take grapes, honey and olive oil and pour them into a blender. Mix until the grapes are well-crushed.
2. Add baking soda and milk. Blend on a slow speed until mixed well.
3. Apply the cleanser on a dampened face and neck.
4. Rinse off with warm water.
a) It is recommended for a combination skin type.
b) Leftover - refrigerate the cleanser in sealed glass jar.
Green Tea-Lavender Toner
4 teaspoons of green tea leaves
1 teaspoon dried peppermint leaves
2 drops of lavender essential oil
4 ounces distilled water
2 teaspoons aloe vera gel
1. Drop all of the herbs in to a French press (used to make coffee or tea).
2. Bring distilled water to a boil and pour it over the herbs.
3. Add lavender essential oil and let it steep for 10 minutes.
4. Press the herbs down, pour the liquid into a glass jar and let it cool.
5. Pour aloe vera gel into the 4 ounce spray bottle and fill with herbal mix.
6. Spray it all over your face.
a) It is recommended for all skin types.
b) Use this toner after cleansing to recharge your skin. Green tea will act as your antioxidant and aloe vera will draw moisture into your skin for a perfect glow.
c) Keep the toner in the refrigerator.
1 tablespoon of sunflower seed meal

1. In a glass bowl, combine both ingredients to form a spreadable paste.

2 chamomile tea bags

Now below is a step-by-step action plan that you can follow. It is designed to treat your adult acne and the discoloration that can result from it, including lines or wrinkles.
Please note that you will have to wash your face or skin every morning and evening. After each wash, apply your anti-acne medication. When washing your face or applying your anti-acne medication, always cover your entire face and don’t just spot treat it.
This way, you are fighting your current and future breakouts, that you don’t see yet, and smoothing out your wrinkles at the same time. Go through following steps when you wake up in the morning and right before you go to bed in the evening:
The last thing challenged skin needs is to be punished. Treat your troubled skin gently. Too much cleansing of the skin can be damaging and vise versa… too little cleansing can be just as damaging. It has to be a perfect balance. You should know that sebaceous glands produce your body’s sebum, which protects you from various bacteria, viruses, fungi and acts as your body’s natural moisturizer.
Removing too much sebum from the surface of the skin will not lower its production; it will only over-dry the skin, and if dry skin cells mix with existing sebum, it can clog pores. On the other hand, if the skin is not thoroughly cleansed, dirt and bacteria will cling to the sebum (remember Klingons from Star Trek?) and contribute to acne formation.
Salicylic acid (that is found in plants) is a fantastic over-the-counter acne cleansing ingredient/product, because of its ability to clear away the buildup of dead skin cells and unclog pores. Salicylic acid is known for effectively managing blackheads and whiteheads, reducing redness and inflammation (it’s anti-inflammatory). Like most acne-fighting ingredients, it can be irritating and drying, so find a product with no more than 2% concentration. As a rule, always remember, when using powerful ingredients, always start small and gradually increase the dose if necessary.
Now, you are ready for your daily cleansing process:
a) Splash water or wet the entire affected area of your skin.
b) Put a blob of the cleanser in the palm of your hand.
c) Apply to the entire affected area (which could be your face, neck, chest or back) and keep it away from your eyes and areas under your eyes.
d) Let the product sit on your skin for a few minutes (you can get some other morning routine done in the meantime, like brushing teeth).
e) Rinse thoroughly with generous amounts of warm water.
Now that your skin has been cleansed, it’s time to apply a topical acne treatment to kill the bacteria that caused acne in the first place. Benzoyl peroxide is the most effective over-the-counter treatment that attacks bacteria and speeds up the removal of dead skin cells. You can purchase it in a gel or lotion format, but make sure to test it before using it. Apply it on a small area on the inside of your arm to make sure you don’t have an allergy. Look for a product that comes with 2.5% to 5% of strength and that is designed to reduce inflammation.
Application process of benzoyl peroxide:
a) Apply a very thin layer (just enough to coat the whole affected area)
b) Lightly absorb any excess with a clean and dedicated washcloth (keep in mind that this ingredient will bleach colored clothes and cloths).
Usually acne is highly inflammatory. The best way to deal with inflammation is by using botanically derived antioxidants and some members of the alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) family. Speaking of AHAs, lactic acid and glycol acid are the two most commonly found in over-the-counter acne formulations that strip the skin of dead cells and smooth out texture.
Also, they extract and push moisture to the surface, which can reduce drying effects of other acne medications. Alpha-hydroxy acids are very powerful and most versatile set of skin ingredients. By exfoliating and loosening clogged pores, these acids enable the penetration of acne medication. In addition, they increase the production of glycosaminoglycans (complex sugars in the skin), round and even out the skin, including pigment layers.
When it comes to the benefits of antioxidants, they help to capture free radicals and reduce the production of cell cytokines (cell signaling molecules that stimulate the movement of cells towards areas of inflammation, trauma or infection) that are released at different times of acne formation. So, select an antioxidant that best fits your skin type in a serum (best for dry skin) or mist (best for oily skin) form.
For example, such antioxidants as vitamin C are known for stimulating collagen production, which is perfect for adults who fight both aging (wrinkles or lines) and acne. In addition, you may need to have a lotion or moisturizer around. a) Apply a thin layer of a lotion that contains antioxidants over the whole affected area.

Over-the-counter products are not as effective (even if you find vitamin A listed as one of the top five ingredients), since vitamin A in the form of retinol is highly unstable, and concentrations constantly change with some light and air exposure.

A large majority of men who shave report multiple skin problems as a result. The core issues usually are razor burns, razor bumps, ingrown hairs, rashes and irritations. Ingrown hairs can develop if the hair is cut too short, below the skin surface and then never makes it out of the skin.
Razor bumps, called pseudofolliculitis barbae, form because the body treats an ingrown hair as an infection and swells up. It primarily occurs in up to 60% of Black men and people with curly hair. If the hair follicles become infected with a bacterium (called staphylococcus aureus) that lives in the respiratory tract (like nose) and gets into follicles during shaving, it can result in red, painful and itchy pus-filled pimples.
If you find yourself with a mild case of this problem, treat it with a warm compress of diluted witch hazel or white vinegar. The only 100% effective treatment is to let the beard grow. After growing it to a certain length, the hair will not grow back into the skin, so avoid shaving for 3-4 weeks. On top of it, to decrease the inflammation, you can apply a mild cortisone cream. If you wish to avoid it in the long run, then improve your shaving method. Most irritations and razor burns are caused by using a blunt razor or poor shaving technique.
So, let’s cover the entire shaving procedure step-by-step. Best results can be achieved when your facial muscles are warmed up, which causes your beard hairs to lift up. Therefore, it would be best if you shave during or right after the shower, when your skin is all warmed up.
1. If possible, use a triple-blade razor with a swivel head to make sure it has a sharp edge to minimize razor burn. Change the blade every two weeks.
2. For a quick shave, splash your face with several handfuls of warm-to-hot water. If you have an extra minute, soak a washcloth in a close to hot water, wring it out and lay it over your face (beard area) for about 1-2 minutes, pressing it into all the contours. This method makes it much easier to cut, because it expands the hair.
3. Spread a thin layer of shaving cream over your beard.
4. Shave in the direction your hair grows, using light and slow strokes.
5. Feel free to use your other hand to pull and stretch the skin, so you flatten the surface for your blade.
6. During your shaving, regularly rinse and tap the razor on the basin to remove hair and built-up shaving cream.
7. Run your hands over your face to check for any stray hairs. If you find any, repeat the above action.
8. Rinse your face well with warm water.
9. Pat your skin with a clean and soft towel, leaving it slightly damp. Don’t rub it.
10. Apply a natural moisturizer to sooth your skin and lock in moisture to keep it smooth and hydrated.

Now, if you have sensitive or rosacea skin, a mask that contains anti-inflammatory ingredients and humectants will feel great, but again - only until it’s on your face. The soothing effect will disappear as soon as you wash it off. Also, if your skin is on the sensitive side, always read the label, because menthol or fruit acids (which are commonly found in masks) could cause irritation.
The reason we apply clay masks is because we believe that they will soak up oils and open up or purify our pores. A clay mask can reduce the oil you have on your skin, but it will build up again in no time. Also, it will not purify your pores the way you might think. In fact, pore strips work the same way - simply lifts dirt off of the skin’s surface. We hear two big buzzing concepts in skincare currently - 'organic' and 'natural.' There is no doubt that natural skin care ingredients benefit your skin on multiple levels… from replenishing its real moisture to supplying nutrients to the skin.
However, before you start buying ingredients randomly and slapping them on your skin, it would be helpful to know a few factors first:
1. Know your skin type (oily, dry, sensitive or combination). Some oils are better than others when it comes to supporting a certain skin type.
2. Identify any existing allergies. We are inclined to believe that organic will turn out to be the ultimate and universal cure for our skin. However, that is not the case. In fact, some organic products may even hurt your skin by triggering certain allergies. There is a group of organic products that are sold in their purest (raw) forms that contain more allergens, which can lead to long-lasting rashes and even eczema. 3. Don't be hung up on the word "organic." Organic does not automatically mean that the plant is clean and safe to use. You might recall the recent June 2011 E. coli outbreak in Europe that caused several deaths. The outbreak was from contaminated bean sprouts grown on an "organic" farm. Even the USDA states on their website the following:
"Are cosmetics made with "organic" ingredients safer for consumers than those made with ingredients from other sources? No. An ingredient's source does not determine its safety. For example, many plants, whether or not they are organically grown, contain substances that may be toxic or allergenic. For more on this subject, see FDA Poisonous Plant Database."
The terms 'organic' and 'natural' are largely responsible for fueling the misconception that all synthetic ingredients are automatically bad and that all organic or natural skin care ingredients are automatically good. Again, it is not all black and white. There are some man-made materials that are necessary (that are used as a preservative) and are not harmful to the skin if formulated properly.
Besides, in oder to receive an 'organic' label from the USDA, a skincare product must contain at least 95 percent organically produced ingredients. How about the other five percent? Even though a lot of cosmetic products do contain organic ingredients, they may also contain synthetic ingredients, so the term 'organic' does not apply to the whole formula. Therefore, it is important for all of us to have a basic understanding of what variations of synthetics are safe and what chemicals are absolutely toxic.
Now, lets look at some powerful ingredients that you may want to use on your skin:
Purified water (triple-filtered and reverse osmosis purified) - removes chemicals from water either through filters or through osmosis, which stunts the chemicals to the side leaving the remaining water chemical-free.

There are some fantastic ingredients that you might not be aware of… like some natural botanical extracts with antioxidants that fight free-radical attacks and/or amino acids that can assist in boosting your skin’s collagen levels, as well as proteins that in many cases will replace those that break down in your skin.
Also, keep in mind that a lot of products have many ingredients that will work for several skin types at the same time. So, glance at the label first to make sure it has a correct amount of the element your skin can handle.
Now, here is an example of how two skin types can share or use the same product. We’ll use a mother and daughter in both of our case scenarios. Let’s say a 15 year old daughter is using an off-the-shelf acne cleanser containing 2.5 percent salicylic acid to control her breakouts. The mom, on the other hand, can use that same cleanser by mixing it with some of her ant-aging cream to improve the effectiveness of her anti-aging product. It also works in reverse. The daughter can use a light anti-aging lotion to help with her acne. The amount of retinol mixed in the anti-aging formula is going to be more gentle and effective on the daughter’s acne than some basic anti-acne products.
Here is a second case scenario: Let’s say a 15-year-old daughter has dry skin in her T-zone area and would like to treat the spot, while her mother is looking for a moisturizer to rejuvenate her aging skin. Both of them can share a vitamin E or C-based lotion that is formulated for the face and for both skin types.

Since our skin tends to be unpredictable and to change with our present surroundings (like weather, hormones or stress that can cause the skin to become oilier), having different products on hand for different conditions can be super helpful. Different skin challenges require different ingredients that will assist you with solving them. Each skin type and challenge has its own list of preferred key ingredients, for instance:
If you have sensitive skin, you should limit the amount of chemical ingredients in any lotions, creams, gels or liquid type of skin care products you use. Instead, look for naturally derived ingredients that help coat your skin and protect it against harsh elements in your environment. The more natural a product you can get, the less potential irritation you’ll experience. Products with added fragrances should be avoided, as well.
However, if a fragrance is derived from natural sources, like actual plants and oils, it should be fine. Just note that some people with super sensitive skin can’t tolerate many of the natural ingredients, either. If you think your skin is extra sensitive, it is best for you to consult with your dermatologist or primary care physician on what is safe to use on your skin.
Otherwise, search for natural elements that will soothe your skin with anti-inflammatory agents, such as chamomile, papaya, olive oil, oat kernel extract or oil, and grape seed oil. Also, another two ingredients that will even out the skin tone and comfort itchy, dry skin are refined colloidal oatmeal and glycerin, which is a great hydrator and is present in all natural (animal and vegetable) fats. Glycerin has the ability to attract water from the environment, as well as the lower layers of skin, while increasing the amount of water in the surface layers of skin. It also allows the skin to breathe.
In addition, I would like to mention a few obvious and non-obvious ingredients. Two of the obvious ingredients that you might be aware of are aloe vera and sulfur; both are known for their healing powers in chronic redness and inflammation. One of the non-obvious ingredient (because it is not used in products much) is the spice turmeric, which is fantastic for sensitive skin. My friend’s daughter has eczema, and this spice does miracles for her because it has very potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
If you are going holistic, ingredients such as comfrey root and oatmeal have great soothing effects. Also, look for products that contain polyphenols, such as pomegranate, which is a good anti-inflammatory agent.
Also, search for products containing natural exfoliants, such as olive seeds, apricot seeds or any type jojoba beads, which will help to loosen up and remove dead skin cells, leaving a smoother and more radiant skin surface.
Combination skin will most likely be divided into specific areas and will need to be treated individually. If you find yourself with a couple of challenges all at the same time, you will have to look at each problem independently and pick products / ingredients for each by mixing and matching them. You may need one product for the breakouts on your forehead and another to treat your dry cheeks.
The number one ingredient to look for in an anti-aging product is hyaluronic acid. It is a substance that is naturally present in the human body and found in the highest concentrations in fluids in the eyes and joints. When it comes to hyaluronic acid application, the best practice would be to start with a very low percentage, see how your skin reacts and then slowly increase the percentage from there.
The second ingredient that you should look for is retinol, which is a pure form of vitamin A. It accelerates cell turnover, so healthier cells rejuvenate faster, making your skin look smoother and younger. Another great set of ingredients to look for are the ones that will help in the regeneration of the skin’s collagen levels and they are hexapeptides, tripeptides and palmitates.
Besides other common ingredients like vitamins A, C and E (which is a great for moisture retention and helping the skin breathe), you also want to look for quality oils that fight wrinkles, like aloe, avocado oil, safflower seed oil, argan oil, cocoa butter and sunflower seed oil, that is all natural and lightweight oil that helps to moisturize, calm and heal your skin. Sunflower seed oil is also helpful if you are suffering from eczema, acne, inflammation or any irritation of the skin.
